The algorithm assigns items when multiple people want them. It uses a few factors in order: tier (family closeness), ranking (your priority order), dibs (must-haves with reasons), and tiebreakers (age, value balance, etc.). Maybe you’re curious how it works, or you’re trying to understand why you got (or didn’t get) something.
The Order of Operations
- Tier — Closer family (children) beat extended family (cousins). Set by relationship.
- Ranking — Higher rank wins. #1 beats #5.
- Dibs — Dibs give a boost. Same tier? Dibber often wins.
- Tiebreakers — If it’s still tied: age, value balance, sentimental connection, category balance, or random. Your estate’s settings determine which apply.
