Writing a Meaningful Dibs Reason

Overview

“Dibs” without a reason is just noise. The executor (and the family) want to know why it matters to you. Maybe you have a story—you helped pick it, it was promised to you, it’s the only thing you have left of them. That’s what to write.

Good Reasons

• “Grandma gave this to me when I turned 16. I’ve worn it to every major event since.”
• “I’m the only one who still uses the typewriter. I’ll actually use it.”
• “Mom told me years ago she wanted me to have this. It’s in her notes.”

Weak Reasons

• “I want it.”
• “It’s worth a lot.”
• “Because.”

Be specific. A sentence or two is enough. It helps the executor and the algorithm understand your connection.
